Let’s be honest: Phoenix summers are no joke. When the thermometer is pushing 115°F and the asphalt looks like it might actually be melting, staying cool stops being a preference and starts being a necessity. Over the years, we’ve helped thousands of homeowners and businesses stay comfortable through some seriously brutal heat, and we’ve picked up a few things along the way.
Here’s what actually works.
Take Care of Your AC Before It Begs for Help
The number one mistake we see every summer? People wait until their system breaks down to give it any attention. By July, we’re slammed. Lead times stretch out, and nobody wants to sweat through a weekend waiting on a repair.
A little preventive maintenance goes a long way:
Change your air filter regularly. A clogged filter makes your system work harder, costs you more in electricity, and shortens the life of the unit. During summer months in a dusty climate like ours, plan on checking it every 30 days. If you’ve got pets or allergy sufferers in the house, even more often.
Clear the area around your outdoor condenser unit. That big metal box outside needs room to breathe. Trim back any shrubs, remove debris, and make sure there’s at least two feet of clearance around it. A blocked condenser runs less efficiently and overheats faster.
Schedule a tune-up. Our technicians check refrigerant levels, clean the coils, inspect electrical connections, and make sure everything is running the way it should. A system that’s been serviced regularly uses less energy and is far less likely to fail on the hottest day of the year.
Smart Ways to Keep Your Electric Bill from Going Through the Roof
Cooling a home in the desert isn’t cheap, but there are real ways to manage the cost without just suffering in the heat.
Set your thermostat to 78°F when you’re home. It sounds warmer than people expect, but combined with ceiling fans (set to spin counterclockwise in summer), it’s comfortable for most people and significantly cheaper than setting it to 72°.
Use a programmable or smart thermostat. If you’re leaving for work at 7 a.m. and not back until 5 p.m., there’s no reason your AC should be cooling an empty house to 74 degrees all day. Program it to ease up while you’re gone and cool back down before you get home. A smart thermostat can also learn your schedule and adjust automatically, and some utility companies even offer rebates for installing one.
Block the sun. Blackout curtains and solar shades make a bigger difference than most people realize. South- and west-facing windows take the brunt of afternoon sun, and keeping them covered can reduce how hard your AC has to work during peak hours.
Check for air leaks. If your ducts are leaking or your doors and windows aren’t sealed well, your cool air is literally escaping. A quick test: light a stick of incense near window frames and door edges. If the smoke wavers, you’ve got a draft that’s costing you money.
Sometimes the Best Cooling Strategy Is Getting Out of the House
No shame in it. There are days when the whole family deserves a break from fighting the heat at home, and Phoenix actually has some great options.
Head to one of the area’s water parks for a full day in the sun with the kids. Wet ‘n’ Wild Phoenix and Golfland Sunsplash are local favorites. If you’d rather keep it low-key, catch a matinee at a movie theater. A couple of hours of air conditioning, a good film, and a bucket of popcorn is an underrated summer activity. The Phoenix Public Library system also offers cool, quiet spaces if you’re looking for something free.
And honestly? If it’s 117°F outside, nobody needs to feel guilty about a day at the mall.
At Brisk Air, Inc., we’re here to make sure your home is ready for whatever this summer throws at it. If your system hasn’t been serviced this season or you’re noticing anything off (higher bills, uneven cooling, strange noises), give us a call.
