Save time, stress, and a service fee with these quick DIY AC Troubleshooting tips.
We’ve all been there: the Arizona heat is cranking up, you walk inside expecting a blast of cool air, and… nothing. Before you panic and pick up the phone, take a deep breath! Sometimes the “fix” is simpler than you think.
At Brisk Air, we want our neighbors to stay cool without spending money they don’t have to. Before you book a technician, try these three quick troubleshooting steps.
1. The “Thermostat Check”: Is it on the right setting?
It sounds simple, but you’d be surprised how often a setting gets bumped or changed by mistake. Our desert dust can also sometimes interfere with sensitive touchscreens!
- The Check: Make sure your thermostat is set to “Cool” and the fan is set to “Auto.” If it’s accidentally switched to “Heat” or “Off,” your system won’t kick in.
- The Battery Factor: If the screen is blank or flashing, try replacing the batteries. A dead thermostat can’t tell your AC to turn on!
2. The “Filter Check”: Is your system “choking” for air?
Airflow is everything. If your air filter is clogged with dust and pet dander, your system has to work twice as hard to pull air through. Eventually, it might freeze up or shut down or to protect itself.
- The Check: Slide out your filter. Hold it up to a light. If you can’t see light through the fibers, it’s time for a new one.
- Pro-Tip: Especially during monsoon season, we recommend checking these every 30 days. High winds can push a lot of debris into your home’s intake.
3. The “Breaker Check”: Did the power trip?
Your AC unit pulls a lot of power, especially when it first kicks on during a heatwave. Occasionally, this surge can trip a circuit breaker.
- The Check: Go to your home’s electrical panel. Look for the switch labeled “AC” or “HVAC.” If it’s pushed to the middle or the “Off” position, flip it all the way off and then back to “On.”
- Warning: If the breaker trips again immediately, stop. This usually indicates an issue that needs a professional’s eye.
Still Not Cooling? That’s Where We Come In.
If you’ve checked the thermostat, replaced the filter, and ensured the power is on, but you’re still feeling the heat, it’s time for a pro. There could be an issue with your refrigerant levels, a failing capacitor, or a motor that needs attention.
Don’t sweat it! Give the team at Brisk Air a call. We’ll get your home back to a comfortable temperature in no time.
